Kickass Torrents (KAT) was a website that served as an online directory for torrent files and magnet links for BitTorrent-based peer-to-peer file sharing and downloading. KAT was founded in 2008, and by late 2014, it had become the world's most frequented BitTorrent directory. The domain was seized by the US authorities in July 2016, and the site's servers were shut down by its personnel. While torrenting is not illegal, many of the files on these sites may be copyrighted, and distributing such information is prohibited. Former KAT employees updated the site and relaunched a comparable site with similar functionality and design in December 2016.
